Heaters - Which is the cheapest zone heater to run?

This is a hotly (forgive the pun) debated topic.

We are looking to save pennies.  Central gas heating is still the cheapest option available to Mr & Mrs Average overall, but there are times when it just doesn't seem sensible to use central heating to heat a whole house, when we are mostly spending time in one room.

Zone heating fills in the gaps.  The main choices are either fan or oil filled radiator heaters.

Trying to decide which is best brings conflicting opinions and it can all be quite confusing.
Basically:

FAN HEATER:

A fan heater provides instant heat.  It is, however, normally only suitable for heating a small area.

OIL FILLED RADIATOR:

Slow to heat.  Normally better for heating a larger area.

SUMMARY:

When it comes to cost, a watt is a watt when it comes to comparing electric heating.  Check the wattage, a 1kw heater uses 1 kw of energy per hour, and so on.

Fan heaters are often higher wattage, and suitable for a quick blast to take the chill off while the oil filled radiator heats up.

In all cases:

As soon as the area is warm enough - Switch off.
Use the temperature controls to avoid over heating...

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER  leave a heater on while you are out, or asleep
