The "Perfect Storm" UK Winters

Winter is always harsh in the UK.  The miserable weather makes people cranky.  Travel becomes unpredictable due to seasonal snow and storms, so commuting and planning getaway holidays is stressful.  Bills shoot up.  The winter literally kills some people, mostly the aged or infirm due to the "heat or eat" crisis that comes with it.  However, this winter seems even more fraught with troubles.

There are some phenomena that seem to be working together to create the "Perfect Storm" this winter.

The UK is broke due to the recent banking crisis and worldwide crunch

Immigration to the UK has recently increased rather than decreased as expected

Current restrictions on immigration to the UK from Bulgaria and Romania have lifted

The UK did have a benefit that supported the poorest in society

This support (as part of some EU arrangement) is available to all EU nationals

The government has been slashed benefits ahead of immigration restrictions being lifted

The end result is that many, many poor and vulnerable families will have to weather future winters with less money.  Jobs are scarce.

Winter arriving migrants come at a time when there is little or no seasonal work available due to the annual slowdown in the travel, farming and construction sectors. The number of poor is growing due to growing levels of unemployment, and  the aged and infirm at at their most vulnerable.  Health budgets have been slashed, and care for people who are mentally and physically in desperate need of support simply isn't what it used to be.

People in Europe are moving from the days of feast, into much leaner times, & making adjustments in expectations, lifestyle & ways of doing things is vital for smoothing this transition,
